Physical Education

All students at Southmoor participate in specialist P.E. classes once a fortnight. Additionally, Foundation to level 4 students engage in Tabloid Sports each week with their entire grade level. During these sessions students are given the opportunity to correctly develop age-appropriate fundamental motor skills, learn about how specific actions impact on their physical health, increase their fitness levels and achieve an overall positive attitude towards sport. Within these sessions students engage in games and specific skill practices which assist them to succeed in a variety of different sports. Students are encouraged to attempt new skills, display sportsmanship and be inclusive of and respectful towards others to develop teamwork skills and confidence.

Complementing the PE program, Levels 5 and 6 students are provided the opportunity to participate in both summer (Term 1) and winter (Term 2) Interschool sports, competing against other local schools in a home and away fixture. A strong focus of this program is healthy competition while highlighting the importance of respectful sportsmanship and friendly relationships with others, as well as having fun.

All our students participate in House Athletics and Cross-Country, and have the opportunity to participate in trials for competition Swimming events. Several senior level children qualify to attend Zone and District Athletic and Swimming Carnivals.

Southmoor provides an annual ‘Learn to Swim Program’ at the Glen Eira Sports and Aquatic Centre, run by qualified swimming instructors. (Levels 3-6 participate in Term 3 and Foundation-2 in Term 4).

At Clubs and Sports during lunchtimes, our Level 6 Sports Captains organise sport tournaments/activities for those who wish to participate. The types of modified activities that are run vary. Some favourites include Down-ball and Soccer for older age groups and Tunnel-ball and Vortex Throw for younger age groups.

Southmoor is a very proud member of the Sporting Schools Organisation.
